There is clearly a lot of news and social media coverage around the potential spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and we recommend that members follow the guidance on the NHS and government web site.

For Instructors looking to run first aid courses or teach aspects of CPR and in water rescue we recommend following the advice provided by the Resuscitation Council UK which can be found here –

https://www.resus.org.uk/media/statements/resuscitation-council-uk-statements-on-covid-19-coronavirus-cpr-and-resuscitation/covid-training/

Whilst the risk is very low we recommend that simulated rescue breathes while conducting rescue tows should not be undertaken at this time. The use of Alternate air sources should not be an issue providing they are thoroughly cleaned before being used by a second person.

Club pool session. There is some evidence that pool chlorination will inactivate COVID-19virus, report can be found here –

https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/coronavirus/novelcoronavirus/guidance/environmentalhealthguidance/Advice%20note%20to%20EHS%20on%20Coronavirus%20and%20Drinking%20%20Water%20and%20Swimming%20Pools_V3.pdf

Whilst this report suggests swimming pool water is safe there are potentially other risks and clubs should follow the advice . The best advice at this time is to follow the recommendations of your local council or pool provider, our risk will be no greater than that for the general public, indeed as fit health divers we should be in a better place.

We would like to emphasise the anyone displaying symptoms i.e. fever or cough should not attend any club or training sessions and should self isolate per Department of Health guidelines.
